IMPROVED SPRING VALLEY STREET LIGHT DESIGN AGREED

I am pleased to report on an improved street light design for Spring Valley agreed by ANC-3D and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT). At the ANC-3D meeting on January 8 DDOT presented its options for twelve residential locations, one phase of its city-wide upgrade, and heard community objections. Commissioners Tanya Hamilton and S. S. Shapley and Commission Chairman John Finney met with DDOT on January 16 where they reviewed the new design DDOT has drawn up with full details for each of the twelve places. We three voted to accept the plan, which should serve as a model for future phases of residential lighting upgrades in our area. The lights will be placed in staggered fashion at 150 foot intervals, measured on the diagonal, and have 150 watt bulbs of the new energy-saving and cost-saving bulbs. The scheme will meet the federal and District standard for urban residential lighting. As each placement is sited, individual home-owners will be consulted on any need for a shield coating on the home side of the globe light. The lights will be the globe style traditionally used in Washington. Mr. Muhammed Khalid and his staff really put their shoulders to the wheel to produce a new design complete and detailed enough to be implemented promptly and keep the project on course. They are to be commended. And they have promised to meet with this ANC -- or any ANC -- well in advance of the next phase of street light upgrade. I encourage residents to consult our new website, <www.anc3d.org>, for more information. I also encourage you to contact my residents’ e-mail network, <SpringValleyDC@starpower.net>, which will be used for ANC as well as other neighborhood matters.
